2: Learn interviewing skills
There is an art to interviewing candidates. For a start, you must ask the right questions and extract the right information without giving away clues about what you want to hear. If the candidate struggles to provide the correct answer, you also don’t want to give them an easy ‘out.’ If interviewing isn’t your thing, think about hiring a professional recruiter.
3: Get a reference
It’s surprising how many employers don’t ask for or follow up on references. You may think that a candidate wouldn’t give you a referee who would say unflattering things about them, but that is not always the case. Also, just as you might discover a reason not to hire a candidate, you could also learn about some potential of which you were unaware.
4: Build a wide network
These days, there are many ways to find candidates, including job fairs, local training providers, social media and good-old-fashioned advertising. To generate a decent number of applicants, it pays to use a wide variety of methods.
5: Hiring at the right time
You know, the best time to hire a candidate is when you don’t desperately need one — you can then be more selective. So, always be on the lookout for good people. If your business is seasonal, you will have a more substantial number of candidates to choose from during the offseason.
